Haenyeo (female divers) is a Jeju community of women, some aged in their 80s, which go diving to gather shellfish for a living without the help of oxygen masks.

Exploring Eastern Jeju

Manjanggul Cave is Asia’s longest lava tube, extending underground for about 8.3 miles (13.4 kilometers). However, only around one kilometer is open to the public, though there’s plenty to see, including unique geological formations such as towering lava columns and the star attraction – the Stone Turtle, which is said to be shaped like Jeju island.

Rising from the very center of the island, Mount Halla is South Korea’s highest mountain and can be seen from most vantage points around the island. On Jeju's northern coast, Yongduam Rock is an estimated 10-meter-tall rock that has been eroded by strong winds and waves into the shape of a dragon's head over time. Upon falling down, his body immediately sank into the ocean while his head rapidly froze up. According to another legend, a white horse dreamed of becoming a dragon and ascending to the sky, but was caught by a soldier and froze.
