The Grand Trianon was erected by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in 1687 on the site of the former ‘Porcelain Trianon’. Commissioned by Louis XIV in 1670 to get away from the arduous pomp of life in the court and to pursue his affair with Madame de Montespan, the Grand Trianon is perhaps the most refined architectural ensemble found on the royal estate of Versailles.

In 1758, Louis XV decided to build a new palace in the middle of his gardens, which, by then, he had been working on for around ten years. He commissioned Ange-Jacques Gabriel, the first architect to the King, to build a pavilion large enough for himself and some of his entourage to live in. With the Petit Trianon, Gabriel produced a blueprint for the neoclassical movement – a perfect example of the ‘Greek style’ that was taking Europe by storm at the time.

The Salle des Gardes (Guards Room) and the immense Salle des Gens d'armes (Hall of the soldiers), built under King Philip the Fair, still remain from the days of the medieval palace, as do the kitchens built under King John the Good. The Compiegne Forest is a historic woodland located near the city of Compiègne in northern France. In June 1940 a second treaty arranging an armistice between France and Nazi Germany was signed in this forest.
