Frequently Asked Questions about the Northern Lights
Find out all of the answers to your burning questions on traveling to the Northern Lights
What is the best place to admire the Northern Lights?
Polar regions and areas within 2,500 km of the magnetic poles are most likely to see the Aurora Borealis. When it comes to the Northern Lights, the farther north you travel, the better your chances are. Aurora hunting is best done above the Arctic Circle (66°33'N), which explains why northern Norway and Svalbard (read more about Svalbard top activities in our Svalbard Travel Guide) are some of the top places to see the Northern Lights. Also among great destinations for an Aurora safari are Iceland, Finland, and Sweden. If you're an experienced Northern Lights hunter seeking non-European destinations, move towards Alaska Aurora Borealis and its activities: polar crab hunting, ice hiking, and whale watchind cruise! ...
Is there a time when I can see Aurora Borealis?
The Northern Lights are technically present throughout the year but aren't visible above the Arctic Circle during the summer months. Arctic winters last from late September to late March or early April. Northern Lights can be seen during this time under the right conditions when the Arctic sky is dark enough. March and September are the most active months for auroras. The sky must be dark and clear of clouds to observe the Northern lights. Between 17:00 and 02:00 is when the Northern Lights are most frequently seen. It's unusual for them to exhibit for more than a few minutes; they may appear for a few minutes, then glide away before returning. You may be lucky enough to see a good display for a couple of hours or longer, although it won't last much longer than 15-30 minutes. When you're planning to include Iceland in your vacation, focus on our blog post - Best Time & Place to See the Northern Lights in Iceland - there you'll find all and even more for making your Iceland trip stunning! ...
What effect do the Northern Lights have on wildlife?
When the Aurora displays, dogs often look up at the sky and bark, suggesting that other animals also observe them. The fact that animals can sense things humans cannot is well documented, even though we cannot be certain. An active Aurora may cause a natural disturbance that some animals can detect....
Can you hear the Northern Lights?
Inuit communities, particularly those living under the Northern Lights, claim to have heard auroras making noise. Considering that sound travels at a slower rate than light, it doesn't seem feasible from a scientific standpoint. It has been attempted to record the Northern Lights but to date no recordings have been made. Despite this, nothing is impossible in science. In theory, electrical discharges from the Northern Lights could produce audible sounds, but no proof has been found yet. ...
Is there a way to take photos of the Northern Lights?
A lot of variables have to be taken into account when photographing the Northern Lights. There will be differences in results between cameras and lenses, so you'll need to try them out to see what works for you. A unique Aurora cannot be compared to any other Aurora. Consequently, settings that work one night might not work the next. Try several settings and see what you get. There is a lot of fun and excitement to be had in experimenting with different settings and watching how the results change....
