Day 1: Arrival, Opera House performance
Welcome to Chengdu! Upon arrival, your driver meets you at the airport or train station and takes you to your centrally located hotel for check-in. The rest of the day is at your leisure.
In the evening we have planned a Shufeng Sicuhuan Opera House performance. Located in the west of Chengdu on Qintai Boulevard, the city's original tourist street. Shufeng has been putting on Sichuan Opera shows for decades, and it is one of the must-sees on your trip. The venue’s decor is a bit tacky, but the performance is colourful, musical, and highly acrobatic. The performance features traditional Chinese instruments, with concerts sometimes held in an outdoor courtyard.
Day 2: Panda Breading Base and City Tour
You can’t visit Chengdu and not go and see the pandas! The Breeding Center is a 45 minutes drive north of the city center, set in peaceful bamboo groves dissected by paved lanes and wooden plank paths. Snap shots of the lolling pandas and catch a glimpse of the tiny baby pandas that are born here with startling regularity. We plan to go early in the morning, when the pandas are most active.
Then after returning a city and taking a bite, we start our city tour - Tianfu Square Tianfu Square, where the nation's largest Mao Zedong statue overlooks Chengdu, is located at the very center of the city. The square lights up at night, with fountains providing a small show to revolutionary music. It is often crowded with migrant workers, and people from outside of Chengdu who take their significant others to the square for a quiet, free night out.
Wu Hou Temple Wu Hou Temple is the major shrine to Sichuan’s past heroes and one of the most popular tourist sites in the city. The temple is divided into three major parts: the cultural relics with Zhaolie Temple, Wu Hou Temple and the Brotherhood Shrine; a sprawling park with ponds, rock sculptures and willow trees; the Jinli Ancient Street adjacent to the temple. Qingyang Temple Qing Yang Temple was first built in the Zhou Dynasty (1,040BC – 221BC) and is one of the largest and most important Daoist temples in the country.
Wenshu Monastery Western China’s largest Buddhist monastery, Wenshu Yuan, is a major tourist attraction in Chengdu. Recent renovations to the alleys around the temple have turned what was once a quiet neighborhood into one massive souvenir stall, but one step into the monastery and all that falls away.
