Day 1: Departure from Inverness
In the early morning, your private guide-driver picks you up in Inverness and takes you on a 4-day the Northern Coast 50 Route tour.
Day 1: From Inverness to Torridon
The first stop of this wonderful route takes you to the Rogie Falls for a delightful woodland to see wild salmon leaping upstream.
Continue to one of the most famous roads in the country, the Bealach na Ba. It is a 2000 foot mountain pass to the village of Applecross with sensational views over the Isle of Skye and Outer Hebrides.*
One more stop on the route today is a picture-postcard fishing village of Shieldaig on Loch of Torridon.
We recommend you to take an optional sunset kayaking tour and immerse yourself in awe-inspiring scenery and spectacular wildlife. You may spot Otters, White-Tailed Eagles and Seals while paddling.
In the late afternoon, you have a check-in at the hotel for overnight.
*Note: due to weather conditions and fog the view can be limited.
Day 2: From Torridon to Ullapool
Following breakfast, you meet the guide-driver and continue the trip.
Today you have a stop at Beinn Eighe Visitor Centre* which gives a full introduction to Beinn Eighe National Nature reserve. Here you can get more information about the story of the reserve through panoramic displays, excellent photography, and you may also spot plenty of wildlife from the viewing window. This area is well-known to climbers, photographers, wildlife enthusiasts and admirers of wild places.
From Beinn Eighe you travel north along Loch Maree Island and witness the famous ancient Caledonian pine forest where some of the trees are over 350 years old.
Upon arrival at Gairloch, you visit unique botanical Inverewe Gardens. The warm currents of the Gulf Stream have nurtured an oasis where exotic plants from all over the world flourish on a latitude more northerly than Moscow. There are several good sandy beaches in the area like Big Sand and Redpoint offering great views to Raasay, Skye, and the Western Isles.
In the afternoon you arrive in a mile-long box canyon of Corrieshalloch Gorge, where you walk across the Victorian suspension bridge to the viewing platform. Here you have a great opportunity to take stunning photos of the crashing waterfalls.
In the evening you arrive at the hotel for overnight.
*Note: In the early morning we recommend you to take an optional walking tour over the hills of Torridon with a local guide and see some very special places and enjoy the stunning views.
Day 3 From Ullapool to Thurso
Following breakfast meet with your guide-driver and continue the trip along remarkable mountains of Inverpolly Nature Reserve such as Stac Pollaidh and Suilven. On the shores of Loch Assynt, you make a stop by the 15th century Ardvreck Castle and take a short ride to Rock Stop café in the North-West Highlands Geopark.
Before you arrive at a Smoo Cave you drive through the sleepy crofting settlements of Scourie and Kylesku. The sea cave is set into limestone cliffs and is large enough to allow walking inside to see a magnificent cascade that falls 25 meters into an 8-meter deep pool.
After a stop for lunch in Durness, you travel around the spectacular coastline of the Loch Eriboll and arrive to the ruined Castle Varrich. From here the views across the Kyle of Tongue towards Ben Hope are breathtaking.
Today you also visit a Strathnaver Museum to learn more about the Gaelic and Norse heritage of northern Scotland.
In the evening you arrive in Thurso for overnight.
Day 4: From Thurso to Inverness
Today is the last day of your NC 500 route trip before you return to Inverness.
Following breakfast, you meet with your guide-driver and the first site you see today is the Castle of Mey - the residence of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. It stands a few miles away from John O’ Groat's village and Duncansby Head with its spectacular sea stacks.
On the way to Dunrobin Castle, you take an extra stop at the town of Wick for a short 30-minute cruise around its Bay. Here you have a chance to see the coastline from another perspective. You also visit the Stack O'Brough known as Scorrie’s Island, weather permitting.
Upon arrival at Dunrobin Castle you have time for lunch, self-guided castle exploration and enjoy a walk in its magnificent Versaille-inspired ornamental gardens. Dunrobin Castle is also one of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 1300s, home to the Earls and later, the Dukes of Sutherland.
Before arriving at Inverness, you visit Glen Ord Distillery for a guided tour and tasting of finest malt whiskey drams.
In the evening you cross the Dornoch Firth Bridge and shortly arrive at Inverness.
Day 4: Arrival in Inverness
Upon arrival in Inverness, you are taken to the hotel or to the airport/train station, depending on your travel arrangements.
