About Split + image

Split, the second-largest city in Croatia, is a vibrant coastal town with a rich history, offering a unique blend of ancient and modern. Here's what makes Split particularly fascinating:

Diocletian's Palace: Built in the 4th century AD for Roman Emperor Diocletian, this sprawling palace complex is one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world. Today, it's not just a historical site, but a lively part of the city where people live, shop, and dine.

Riva Promenade: This seaside promenade is the heart of Split. Lined with palm trees, cafes, and restaurants, it's a perfect place to enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere.

Marjan Hill: A forested park offering panoramic views of Split and the Adriatic Sea. Ideal for hiking, jogging, and picnics.

St. Domnius Cathedral: Originally Diocletian’s mausoleum, it was converted into a cathedral in the 7th century. Its bell tower offers fantastic views of the city.

Mestrovic Gallery: Dedicated to the work of 20th-century sculptor Ivan Meštrović, this gallery showcases a collection of his most significant sculptures, drawings, and designs.

Archaeological Museum: This museum boasts a vast collection of artifacts from ancient Salona, Split, and other parts of Dalmatia.

Vibrant Markets: Split hosts various markets, the most famous being the Pazar market, where locals buy fresh produce and the Peskarija fish market.

Split's Beaches: Bacvice is the most famous city beach, known for its sandy shores and a game called 'picigin', a local favorite. There are also many pebbly beaches in and around Split.

Local Cuisine: Split offers a rich culinary scene with many traditional Dalmatian dishes. Seafood plays a significant role, but there's also pasticada (a beef dish), and soparnik (a chard-filled pastry).

Festivals & Events: Split Film Festival, Ultra Europe Music Festival, and the Split Summer Festival (Splitsko Ljeto) are some of the notable events that attract both locals and tourists.

Split's unique charm lies in its combination of rich history and dynamic modern life. The city offers a vibrant ambiance with its numerous cafes, bars, and eateries, and its location on the Dalmatian coast makes it a gateway to many islands and other coastal towns.
