Welcome to Spain

Bilbao is the largest city in the province of Biscay and in the Basque Country in northern Spain. It's a city that combines a rich and diverse cultural history with modern infrastructure, design, and technology, making it a fascinating destination for many tourists. Here are some interesting aspects about Bilbao:

Guggenheim Museum: One of the city's most famous landmarks is the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, a museum of modern and contemporary art. It's known for its innovative design by renowned architect Frank Gehry. The titanium-clad structure, which has been described as one of the most significant works of architecture in the latter part of the 20th century, is an attraction in its own right, quite apart from the notable art collections it houses.

Basque Culture: Bilbao offers a rich exposure to the Basque culture, which is unique to this region of Spain. The Basque language, known as Euskera, is one of the oldest languages in Europe, and it's unrelated to any other known language. Basque cuisine is also famous, particularly its pintxos - the Basque version of tapas.

Old Town (Casco Viejo): The city's old town is a medieval neighborhood with narrow, winding streets full of local shops, traditional markets, and tapas bars. It's a great place to experience the more traditional side of Bilbao.

Modern Infrastructure: Along with its rich history, Bilbao is also recognized for its impressive modern infrastructure. Apart from the Guggenheim, the city features structures like the Zubizuri bridge by Santiago Calatrava and the Iberdrola Tower, the tallest building in the Basque Country.

Festivals: The Semana Grande is a major festival in Bilbao, occurring annually in August. It includes strongman games, free music performances, and the popular "comparsas" (groups of musicians, artists, and performers) that bring life to the city.

Nearby Attractions: Bilbao's location allows easy access to both mountains and the coast. The city is just a short distance away from stunning natural landscapes and beautiful coastal towns, making it a good base for exploring the wider region.

Urban Regeneration: Bilbao is often used as a model for successful urban regeneration. In the 1980s and 90s, it was a declining industrial city. However, through strategic investment in landmark cultural institutions like the Guggenheim and the use of innovative architecture, the city has reinvented itself as a thriving center of culture and tourism.

Green Spaces: Despite its urbanization, Bilbao is also known for its abundance of parks and green spaces. The Doña Casilda Iturrizar park and the Etxebarria park are among the city's most visited ones.

Bilbao's blend of traditional and modern experiences, along with its rich culture, makes it a truly unique city.
