We are taking you to a day trip to Gaztelugatxe - a small peninsular island in the Bay of Biscay that resembles a castle; in fact, its name translates as “castle rock.” It is accessible from land via a footbridge over the rocks. A small chapel dedicated to San Juan (St. John) sits atop the island. You can try to reach the top of Gaztelugatxe, which is reachable by climbing 231 steps up a rocky slope. It will be painful, but they say, the breathtaking views are well worth the exertion.

Then you head to Guernica, the town that was bombed in 1937. This event inspired Picasso’s most famous piece of art – “Guernica.” The bombing almost entirely destroyed the city and many civilians perished. Guernica also holds great political importance since it is home to the Guernica Tree, where underneath its branches, Basques were granted autonomy in the Middle Ages.

Gaztelugatxe appeared in Game of Thrones Season 7 as the location for Daenerys Targaryen’s ancestral home of Dragonstone. Interesting fact is that the Dragonstone Castle is not real, it was added with the help of CGI (Computer-generated imagery). Instead of the castle there is a small chapel atop the island. 

You can try to reach the top of Gaztelugatxe, which is reachable by climbing 231 steps up a rocky slope. It will be painful, but they say, the breathtaking views are well worth the exertion.

Gaztelugatxe - Game of Thrones Filming Location

Today you meet your guide and driver and head for Zumaia - a small town in the province of Guipuzcoa, famous for geological outcrops. 

Thanks to its unique landscape, the Itzurun beach nearby Zumaia was used as a filming location in Game of Thrones Season 7. The rocky beach with dramatic 500 ft limestone cliffs reminding dragon scales was filmed as the site of the fantastic Dragonstone Beach in Westeros. 

After a half day trip you return to Bilbao.

After breakfast you meet your driver in the hotel lobby. Today you head for Santander - the capital city of the Cantabria region on Spain’s north coast. 

Upon arrival after nearly 1.5-hour drive, you meet your guide and explore the small historic center, admire the Catedral de Santander with its Gothic cloister and walk along the rugged Atlantic coastline.

Then a short ride from the city takes you to Magdalena Peninsula that is home to the beautiful Palacio de la Magdalena. Built in the 20th century, it was the royal summer residence. Entrance to the palace is included.
